Gary James' Interview With Guitarist Jim Caterine Of
Sacred Rite

Who would think that Honolulu, Hawaii would be the home of one of the best Heavy Metal bands in the world? Well, it's true. Calling themselves Sacred Rite, this quartet has been making quite a name for themselves worldwide. Jim Caterine, Sacred Rite's guitarist/vocalist talked with us about the group.

Q - Jim, what exactly is Sacred Rite's new style of Heavy Metal?

A - It's definitely not your typical one note bass line Heavy Metal. Our bass player, Peter Crane, has got to be one of the best Heavy Metal bass players I've heard. His bass lines are moving all the time. They never stand still. We also have so many influences that aren't Heavy Metal. We all listen to Queen, Pat Travers, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, classical violin and the list goes on. These influences help us to put things in our music that aren't Heavy Metal, but it's still powerful because our setup and image is Heavy Metal.

Q - What is the Metal scene like in Honolulu?

A - There really is no Metal scene over here. The only scene there is, is on Sunday nights at a night club called the Waikiki Junction. But even there the bands play all cover tunes.

Q - You've opened for Ozzy, Alcatrazz, Montrose and Triumph. Has that made you even more popular in Hawaii?

A - Yes, most definitely. Opening for concerts is the best form of exposure because there's so many people. We've been real lucky in that the crowds have always treated us well.

Q - How were you able to go on a Mid-West tour without label support?

A - What that was, to tell you the truth, was just a bunch of club dates in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. It was definitely a learning experience. So, actually it wasn't much of a tour.

Q - You say you're seeking representation. I assume you mean management.

A - Yes, management. Or monetary backing and the signing to a major label.

Q - What's next on your agenda?

A - We are re-releasing the album with a different cover and hoping the right person will hear it. If nothing happens, we'll probably go back into the studio and record a four track demo of our new material and possibly move to the West Coast.
